RAF Historical Society Spring Seminar: The RAF and Nuclear Weapons

On Wednesday 8 April 2026, the RAF Historical Society will examine the history of the RAF and nuclear weapons from 1955 to 1998.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Brian Burridge will chair an important seminar examining the history of the RAF and nuclear weapons from 1955 to 1998. The impending return of the Service’s nuclear role provides an excellent and timely opportunity to consider some key aspects of the RAF’s nuclear history. These include the early post-war development of UK nuclear weapons and the complex development of the WE.177 - the last nuclear bomb carried by the RAF, which was deployed on a range of aircraft in the UK and Germany. The day’s final presentation will provide an overview of the reintroduction of the nuclear role with the F-35A Lightning II and how the RAF is adapting to this major change. It should be a fascinating day.

Cost includes coffee and tea (from 10am) and a finger buffet lunch.
